Knights field hockey dealt 3-1 loss by Lindenwood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University field hockey team was defeated 3-1 by Lindenwood on Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Eastern College Athletic Conference play.

Senior forward Kathryn Schneidtmiller scoring the tying goal off an assist from junior midfielder Elle Lichte in the first half for Bellarmine (7-5, 2-2 ECAC), but Lindenwood (7-2, 3-1) scored twice in the second half to pull out the win.

"It was a tough loss today," Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker said. "We had a lot of opportunities in both halves."

Indeed, Bellarmine built a 15-9 advantage in shots, including 12-7 on frame. The Knights also collected seven penalty corners to four for the Lions.

But Lindenwood got nine saves from goalkeeper Skylar Starbeck and did a better job offensively of capitalizing on its opportunities. Greta Banholzer opened the scoring in the 26th minute when she rebounded her own shot that was saved by Bellarmine freshman goalkeeper Heather Gregory and put it back in for a 1-0 lead.

Bellarmine responded in the 29th minute. From the right wing, Lichte found Schneidtmiller, who slotted the ball into the net for the equalizer. It was Schneidtmiller's fourth goal of the weekend — she posted a hat trick against Saint Thomas Aquinas — and team-leading ninth of the season.

After the score was knotted 1-1 at halftime, Lindenwood's Noor Fons delivered the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute off a penalty corner. Bellarmine would initially appear to tie it up when Lichte punched a shot into the net, but an infraction was called prior to the attempt.

Tara Robben added a valuable insurance goal for Lindenwood when she scored in the 64th minute.

"Defensive breakdowns and not being able to finish in our circle result in losses," Blankenbaker said. "We didn't process the ball when we were up numbers, resulting in no shots at a critical point of the game. We continue to play well and come up short."

Bellarmine recognized seniors Schneidtmiller, Alex Ginter, Aimee Ilgenfritz, Sara Nicolas, Kelsey O'Bryan and Anna O'Toole prior to the match.

"They have been very important to building our program, and they leave a very solid foundation for the future," Blankenbaker said.

The contest marked the final regular-season home match for the Knights, who will begin a six-game road trip at Mercy next Saturday.
