LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team has been susceptible to allowing an early goal, but the Knights did a role reversal Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier while throttling William Jewell 4-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Junior midfielder
Callum Southern scored the first of his two goals in the 11th minute for Bellarmine (5-7-1, 4-6 GLVC). His second came after the intermission when sophomore midfielder
Keegan Gordon and senior forward
Luke Mocherman also scored against the Cardinals (2-10, 2-8). Senior midfielder
Jared Kemper and freshman midfielder
Mitch Lammert registered assists.
There were plenty of shots in the match, with Bellarmine racking up 20 and William Jewell 17. However, none of the Cardinals' attempts found the net as sophomore goalkeeper
Zach Pogue tallied five saves and his fourth shutout.
On the other hand, Bellarmine capitalized on several of its scoring opportunities. Southern opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he made a run down the left side toward the goal box and laced a shot inside the far post for a quick 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same at halftime, but the second half saw a late onslaught of goals from the Knights. Gordon netted his first collegiate goal mostly off pure hustle, as he received a pass through the middle of the box from Kemper in the 74th minute and beat two defenders and the goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.
That would be the first of three goals in less than a five-minute span. In the 76th minute, Southern rebounded his own shot that was saved by Quinn Ruggeri and punched in the rebound for a 3-0 lead. Southern leads the Knights this season with four goals.
Bellarmine wasn't finished. In the 79th minute, Lammert sent a corner kick to Mocherman, who pounded a header into the upper right corner of the net for a 4-0 lead. It was Mocherman's third goal of the season.
Bellarmine scored its most goals since a 4-1 victory against Quincy in mid-October of last season.
Bellarmine plays next weekend at Missouri S&T and Drury.
