Knights comeback falls short as Quincy registers 4-set victory

QUINCY, Ill.—The host Quincy Hawks stood firm to post a 2-1 (25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25) victory as the visiting Bellarmine Knights tried to battle back from an 0-2 deficit in a Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball match at Pepsi Arena.

Bellarmine fought back from a six-point deficit in the opening set to get within a point, but the Hawks re-surged for a 25-21 set one victory.  The Knights fell behind early in the second set as well, but clawed back from five down to tie it. Again, Quincy quelled the BU comeback to win 25-21.

Finally in the third set, Bellarmine completed the comeback.  After trailing by five early in the set, the Knights roared back as freshman Kendall Barrett registered seven kills to lead Bellarmine to a 25-20 win.

The fourth set was close throughout as Bellarmine's 10-7 lead was the largest margin of the set.  Quincy eked out the victory, scoring final two points after the Knights had fought off one match point to tie score at 25.

Barrett finished with a game-high and a career-high 18 kills while hitting a solid .261. Sophomore Lydia Lange also had a solid outing for the Knights with 10 kills and a .389 attack percentage.

The Hawks were led by Bekah Raebel and Taylor McMonagle with 15 and 11 kills respectively.

Bellarmine libero Jordyn Kuchenbrod, who entered as the GLVC's digs leader, increased her lead in that category by coming up with 35 in the four-set match for an average of 8.75 digs per set.

The Hawks improve to 7-5 overall with the victory while moving to 2-1 in conference play.  The Knights, who will face Truman State tomorrow at 2 p.m. (ET), fall to 9-3 overall and 0-3 in the GLVC.
