Knights men's soccer defeated by Rangers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play despite a decided advantage on the stat sheet.

After the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime, Alberto Gonzalez scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute for the Rangers (3-4-1, 1-4-1 GLVC). Bellarmine dropped to 3-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the GLVC.

Junior midfielder Ryan Fagan scored Bellarmine's goal in the 36th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Fagan collected a loose ball after a corner kick and drilled his first goal of the season. Ryan Shogren gave the Rangers an early lead after scoring in the sixth minute.

Bellarmine didn't score again, but it wasn't for a lack of chances. The Knights racked up a staggering 26 shots, including 11 on goal, to the seven and three of UWP. Bellarmine had a 10-3 advantage in shots before halftime and a 16-4 advantage after the intermission.

Making the outcome even more frustrating for Bellarmine was that the Knights had an 11-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Nate Kitchell corralled nine saves for Wisconsin-Parkside. The Rangers also had a key defensive save on a near Bellarmine goal.

Bellarmine plays next weekend at Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's.
