Marino scores with 35 seconds left as Knights women's soccer edges TSU 1-0

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — There's something about the Truman State women's soccer team that brings out the cold-bloodedness in Polly Marino.

Out of Marino's three career goals, two have been dramatic game-winners against the Bulldogs, with the latest coming Friday as the Bellarmine University junior midfielder scored with only 35 seconds remaining to lead the visiting Knights to a 1-0 triumph in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

"What a huge win for our kids," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "We've talked a lot about sticking with the process, everyone being better at their job and waiting for the right matchup and circumstance to take their moment. We had a lot of people step up in that regard today, and it came together."

Marino's first goal of the season was a memorable one for the Knights (5-3-3, 4-3-3 GLVC). The same could be said of her score two years ago against the Bulldogs (4-5-4, 4-4-3) in the regular season at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium when she sank the "golden goal" in a 1-0 overtime victory. She turned the tables again on Truman State after the Bulldogs defeated the Knights 1-0 last season on a goal 43 seconds into overtime.

"It was kind of like (the movie) 'Groundhog Day': another hard-fought, one-goal result against Truman State," Tinius said. "We have a lot of respect for their program, and we were lucky to end up on the right side of things today."

With less than one minute remaining in regulation, sophomore forward Annabel Moore crossed to a cutting Marino at the top of the box. Marino's path was cut off by a Truman State defender, but she was able to fend her off as the Bulldog player fell to the ground. As Marino continued her surge forward, she met another defender squarely and nearly tumbled over before she used an arm to maintain balance. Marino sprang back up and managed to lunge forward and poke a shot over TSU goalkeeper Katie Mattingly and into the net for the game-winner with 35 seconds left.

The 5-foot-4 Marino scored the goal out of pure tenacity and, in the process, gained redemption.

"Polly was as down as anyone after the match against Quincy (a 1-0 overtime loss Sunday)," Tinius said. "She took a lot of ownership for how that finished, so it was awesome to see her get this goal today.

"We actually practiced a goal celebration in that end (of the field) at training last night to get the vibes on our side since we've struggled scoring," Tinius added. "We also talked before the game about Polly scoring one against them two years ago in overtime. It's funny how things come together sometimes!"

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Smith and the defense notched their sixth shutout with Smith corralling three saves. Bellarmine finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots, including 4-3 on frame, after Marino's goal.

Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at William Jewell.

"We've now given ourselves a great opportunity to get two results on the road," Tinius said. "We'll have to rally the troops and go after another one."
