LIBERTY, Mo. — The monkey is off the Bellarmine University men's soccer team's back.
On Sunday, the visiting Knights registered their first road win of the season, largely dominating William Jewell in a 3-1 triumph in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Sophomore forward
Tomas Bernedo, senior midfielder
Ryan Fagan and senior midfielder
Callum Southern each scored a goal for Bellarmine (8-4-1, 6-4-1 GLVC), which entered 0-4-1 away from Owsley B. Frazier Stadium while being a perfect 7-0 on their home turf. Freshman defender
Greg Fischer notched assists on the Knights' first two goals and sophomore midfielder
Mitch Lammert had a helper on the third score against William Jewell (3-11, 1-10).
Bellarmine arguably controlled the match even more than the final score indicated. The Knights owned a decisive 16-2 advantage in shots, including 9-2 on frame. William Jewell goalkeeper Nick Cooper made six saves, with several coming in spectacular fashion to keep Bellarmine from an even gaudier goal total.
The Knights essentially removed Cooper from the equation on their first two goals. Bernedo staked the team to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when he banged in a header off a splendidly placed corner kick from Fischer. Bernedo recorded two goals and two assists in the week's three matches.
Early in the second half, Bellarmine boosted its lead to 2-0 when Fischer threaded a cross to a wide-open Fagan streaking toward the far post, and he easily tapped in his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Fischer has amassed a team-best five assists.
Lammert is right behind Fischer after adding his fourth assist. After William Jewell cut its deficit in half on a free kick in the 61st minute, Lammert spotted Southern racing down the left side, and Southern ripped in his team-best seventh goal of the season for a 3-1 advantage in the 73rd minute. Southern scored four goals over his last four matches.
Bellarmine will host Rockhurst on Friday and Drury on Sunday. The latter is Senior Day and marks the Knights' final regular-season home match.
