LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In perhaps one of the biggest victories in the history of the Bellarmine University men's soccer program, the Knights scored the first two goals and held off a fierce comeback bid from second-ranked Rockhurst in a 2-1 upset special Friday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine (9-4-1, 7-4-1 GLVC) protected its home turf in a charged atmosphere and moved to 8-0 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Knights dealt Rockhurst (11-1-2, 10-1-1) its first loss of the season behind goals from senior midfielder
Ryan Fagan and freshman midfielder
Jonas Skulstad, two assists from sophomore forward
Tomas Bernedo and a staggering 10 saves from junior goalkeeper
Zach Pogue.
Rockhurst had allowed a mere five goals all season and entered Frazier Stadium fresh off three consecutive shutouts. Fagan ended that streak in the 11th minute when he got behind Rockhurst's defense near the far post and slotted in a cross from Bernedo for a 1-0 lead on his second goal of the season.
Bellarmine took that 1-0 advantage into halftime and boosted it to 2-0 in the 58th minute after Bernedo spotted Skulstad cutting toward the box. He took a few dribbles and then curled in a shot from 14 yards inside the far post. It was the second time in four matches that Bernedo registered two assists, and he also tallied two goals in that span.
Skulstad's second goal of the season proved to be the game-winner, and it also marked the first time this season Rockhurst allowed more than one goal in a match. In the 67th minute, the Hawks' Kaleb Jackson scored his eighth goal of the year to trim Bellarmine's lead to 2-1.
Pogue was sensational in goal for Bellarmine. With less than five minutes remaining, he leaped to bat away a shot that appeared destined to land just under the crossbar and in the net. His 10 saves were a career high.
Bernedo's pinpoint passing and Fagan's and Skulstad's strong finishes helped allow Bellarmine to overcome a 22-7 deficit in shots, including 11-3 on frame. Rockhurst attempted 11 shots in each half.
Bellarmine will host Drury at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday. It will be Senior Day for the Knights.
