Knights fall on the road to No. 4 LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.—The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team went toe to toe with the nation's fourth-ranked team in a road game on Monday, and although LIU Post came away with a 4-0 victory, the Knights came away with some confidence.

Playing their third game in three days, Bellarmine fell behind early to the Pioneers and trailed 3-0 at the halftime break as LIU's Emily Miller scored the second of her three goals just seconds before the horn sounded for intermission.

Despite the Knights outshooting the Pioneers 8-3 in the second period, Bellarmine could not find the back of the cage while the hosts scored once more for the 4-0 victory.

"We played a very good team today," said Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker.  "I think we learned a lot, and it reflected in our play in the second half.  It took us most of the first half to realize we could play with them, and as our confidence grew, it was a close game."

Bellarmine actually won the statistical battle, outshooting LIU Post 12-9 and drawing six penalty corners to five for the Pioneers. However, LIU Post goalie Rachel Vellis came up big for her team, registering five saves to shut out the Knights.

"We really need to find a way to score, given all the opportunities we earned," Blankenbaker said. Five different players got off shots on goal for the Knights: Elle Lichte, Amanda Jaworski, Lillie Nitzken, April Paulson, and Carly Anson.

Overall, Blankenbaker was pleased with his squad. "I'm really happy with our effort (today), and that we played the entire 70 minutes," he said.

The Knights fall to 6-10 overall while LIU Post, who plays in the Northeast 10 Conference, improved to 12-2.

Bellarmine now gets more than a week off before closing its regular season with a pair of home Eastern College Athletic Conference contests.  The Knights host Newberry on Friday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m., and they wrap up their 2017 home campaign the following day with a noon game against Belmont Abbey.
