Cardinals upset Knights in straight sets

LIBERTY, Mo.—The Bellarmine Knights volleyball team was upset in straight sets today by the homestanding William Jewell Cardinals in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the Mabee Center.

The Knights' offense sputtered the entire match as Bellarmine hit just .159 and recorded  39 kills while the Cardinals hit .220 and put down 47 kills.

The opening set was foretelling as the Knights hit just .024 and managed just eight kills as the Cardinals won the the first game handily 25-17.

Bellarmine seemed to have rebounded in the second set, but William Jewell went on a 7-0 run to turn a 20-16 deficit into a 23-20 advantage.  Once again the Knights appeared to have rebounded and had a chance to win the set after taking a 25-24 lead, but WJC won the final three points to take a 27-25 victory.

In the final set, Bellarmine jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead only to see William Jewell erase that advantage with a 7-3 run. From there, neither team got on much of a roll, and the final score of 25-21 represented the largest margin of the game.

Despite the loss, the Knights had two players turn in double-doubles with Margaret Horihan recording 12 kills and 11 digs while Hayden Dailey tallied 10 kills and 13 digs.

The match also saw two milestones achieved by the Knights. Jordyn Kuchenbrod registered 24 digs to bring her career total to 2,014 and make her just the second Knight in school history to go over the 2,000 plateau.  Meanwhile, Allie Muha's nine digs put her over the 1,000-mark in her career with 1,005.

Paige Cunningham paced the William Jewell attack with 12 kills while hitting .353.

The Knights fall to 19-6, 9-4 GLVC while the Cardinals improve to 10-16, 4-9 GLVC.

Bellarmine returns to action Halloween night with a road trip to the University of Indianapolis for a 7 p.m. match.
