LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A return to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium proved to be the perfect cure for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team.
On Friday, the Knights emphatically ended a three-game losing streak and remained perfect at home with a commanding 3-0 victory over Illinois Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Senior midfielder
Callum Southern, freshman midfielder
Jonas Skulstad and freshman midfielder
Micah Linscott scored first-half goals for Bellarmine (6-4, 4-4 GLVC), which improved to 6-0 at Frazier Stadium. Freshman defender
Greg Fischer added an assist against the Prairie Stars (5-5-1, 5-3-1).
Bellarmine's attack clicked from the outset as the Knights seemingly fired shots at will to open the match. In the 12th minute, Bellarmine found the net for the first time as Southern tracked down a deflection toward the right side of the box and ripped in a shot for a 1-0 lead. It was Southern's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Bellarmine scored again in the 22nd minute on Skulstad's first collegiate goal. He pounded in a header off a corner kick from Fischer, who collected his third assist of the season.
Linscott made it 3-0 in the 34th minute. After a Southern attempt caromed off the crossbar, UIS' goalkeeper stopped Linscott's initial shot, but Linscott was there to knock in the easy rebound marking his third goal of the season.
Bellarmine's defense recorded its second shutout. Junior goalkeeper
Zach Pogue made a highlight reel save in the first half, sprawling out as he was racing back toward the goal to bat away a would-be goal by the Prairie Stars.
Bellarmine piled up 24 shots to four for Illinois Springfield, and the Knights had a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Pogue registered three saves in the shutout.
Bellarmine will host Quincy at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
