LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team maintained its dominance at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium as senior midfielder
Callum Southern scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Quincy on Monday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Sophomore forward
Tomas Bernedo tallied a pair of assists and sophomore midfielder
Donald Aviles had one for Bellarmine (7-4, 5-4 GLVC), which improved to 7-0 at Frazier Stadium. The Knights scored both their goals against the Hawks (5-6, 4-5) in the second half.
The match was moved to Monday after severe weather forced a postponement on Sunday. Bellarmine notched its second shutout in a row after the Knights blanked Illinois Springfield 3-0 on Friday.
Southern recorded the game-winning goal in the victory over the Prairie Stars, and he did again Monday in the triumph over Quincy. With the two goals against the Hawks, Southern boosted his team-leading total to six.
Bellarmine was the aggressor early and came close to scoring on multiple occasions in the first half, with one near-miss coming when Bernedo hit the post. The Knights registered a 9-1 advantage in shots before halftime.
It didn't take long for Bellarmine to find the net after the intermission. In the 50th minute, Aviles found Bernedo in the middle of the box, and Bernedo dropped off a pass to Southern on the left for an open shot that Southern buried.
The Knights' second goal was similar. Senior midfielder
Ryan Fagan crossed to Bernedo in the box. Bernedo had the option to launch a shot but displayed great patience and instead found Southern for another open look, and Southern capitalized a second time for a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute.
Bellarmine junior goalkeeper
Zach Pogue and the defense posted their third shutout of the season. The Knights finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots, including 5-2 on frame.
Bellarmine plays Friday at Truman State and Sunday at William Jewell.
