SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Playing just hours after a double-overtime, two-shootout game against No. 8 Limestone on Friday night, the Bellarmine Knights field hockey team mustered the energy to pull out a 3-0 victory over host Converse College in a nonconference game on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the quick turnaround, Bellarmine came out firing with
Mandi Isom and
Elle Lichte getting off shots less than a minute into the contest. Although both players came up empty, Lichte eventually broke through for the game's first score in the 29
th minute when she collected a rebound off a shot by
Helena Varga and fired into the top of the cage.
Just two minutes later, Varga took a pass from
Lillie Nitzken and scored to put the Knights up 2-0 heading into halftime.
Merit Harris scored the game's final goal just 4:47 into the second period when she collected a loose ball and beat Converse goalie Ciriaca Petitto.
The Knights' defense surrendered just one shot in the final 35 minutes as Bellarmine held a 14-4 shot advantage in the game. The Valkyries got just two shots on frame and Knight goalie
Heather Gregory stopped both shots as she picked up the shutout.
"The short turnaround had an obvious effect on us today," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker.
Despite the two quick shots by his squad, Blankenbaker said, "We came out flat mentally and that affected every aspect of our play."
With the lack of rest and with the luxury of a lead, Blankenbaker was able to play everyone available on the roster, which he said will help later in the year.
Gregory drew praise from the Bellarmine coach after the game. "Heather had another outstanding day," he said. "She was in charge of the defensive circle, and her communication to help organize really helped. I was happy to see her get the shutout."
Bellarmine moves to 5-8 with the victory while Converse slips to 0-10.
The Knights continue their stretch of 10 consecutive games away from Frazier Stadium with a trip to New York to face Mercy, Molloy and LIU Post on Oct. 14, 15, and 16.
