LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 14 Quincy University women's soccer team scored in overtime to send Bellarmine to a 1-0 loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on a rainy Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Katie Heiligenstein scored in the 94th minute for the GLVC-leading Hawks (10-2, 8-1 GLVC). The match marked the sixth for Bellarmine (4-3-3, 3-3-3) that went into overtime.
"That was a very good effort from our players in difficult conditions against a difficult opponent," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "I thought we did a lot of things well today and all weekend. This one stings, but the result on Friday (1-0 win over Illinois Springfield) and the quality of the performance today were another step forward."
After neither team scored in regulation amid the steady rain, Quincy set up for a corner kick about four minutes into overtime. Mary Maloney had a shot that was blocked, but Heiligenstein was in perfect position to redirect the deflection into the net for the game-winner.
Particularly assertive in the second half, Quincy finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, including 8-4 on frame. The Hawks took all three of the attempts in the overtime and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"At some point, we have to put the ball in the net," Tinius said. "We are doing so many good things, but you can only hold on for so long not scoring. We've tried different systems and different personnel. We've scored some great goals in training, but in that moment in game situations we lack the same conviction to finish the job, sometimes even passing up on opportunities. We just have to keep at it, keep working, keep coming up with new ideas and believe it will come. We have a lot of people doing a lot of good work now, and we have to believe we can be rewarded for sticking with the process."
Goalkeeper Megan Swanson recorded the shutout for Quincy. Bellarmine senior goalie
Taylor Smith notched seven saves, several in impressive fashion.
"
Taylor Smith was phenomenal today with some big saves," Tinius said. "We created a couple similar situations as the one they scored on and just didn't get on the rebounds. That's the way a lot of these games get decided."
