LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine Knights volleyball team roared to its 21st win of the season on Friday evening by sweeping the visiting Maryville Saints (25-17, 25-19, 25-14) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
Seniors
Margaret Horihan and
Hayden Dailey paced the Bellarmine attack with 16 and 13 kills respectively.
The Knights dominated the match from the outset. In fact, the scoreboard read in favor of the Saints just once at 8-7 in the second set, and Bellarmine responded with a 7-1 run to vanquish any notion of a comeback by Maryville.
A look at the stat sheet shows big advantages for the Knights in virtually every category except for blocks where the Saints held a 5-2 edge. Bellarmine registered 45 kills on the night to just 26 for Maryville. The hitting percentage is reflective of that statistic with BU swinging at a .279 clip while the Saints managed just .128.
Defensively, the Knights out-dug their opponents 51-35, with the Saints recording just eight more digs than BU libero
Jordyn Kuchenbrod did as an individual (27).
Bellarmine improved its overall record to 21-6 with an 11-4 GLVC record. The 21 wins tie for third most in program history. Only the 1983 team (30) and the 1998 team (25) have won more.
Maryville drops to 2-27 with a GLVC mark of just 1-14.
The Knights play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they'll face Quincy in a 3 p.m. match. Prior to first serve, Bellarmine will hold Senior Day activities to honor five seniors: Dailey,
Bridget Guinane,
Megan Kimbley, Horihan, and
Allie Muha.
