LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior midfielder
Callum Southern scored the game-winning goal early in the second overtime as the Bellarmine University men's soccer team opened the season Thursday with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cedarville at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Senior defender
Sanjin Mehicic scored the first goal for Bellarmine (1-0) against the Yellow Jackets (0-1), while sophomore midfielder
Mitch Lammert and senior midfielder
Joe Workman registered assists.
After a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and the first overtime, Bellarmine scored a little over one minute into the second extra frame. Workman leapt and headed a pass forward to Southern, who streaked past a defender toward the center of the field and whizzed a shot inside the right post from 20 yards for the game-winner.
Bellarmine took a 1-0 lead deep in the first half when Lammert curled a corner kick to Mehicic, who headed it into the net in the 42nd minute. Cedarville knotted it at 1-1 in the 68th minute when Nick Marculo crossed to Levi Haight for the equalizer.
The defenses kept the shot counts highly respectable. Bellarmine ended with an 11-8 advantage, including 7-1 on frame.
Bellarmine will host Davenport at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
