LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Another overtime, another thrilling finish.
For the second straight match to start the season, the Bellarmine University men won in bonus soccer, as senior forward
Joe Workman converted a header for the game-winning goal in overtime in a 4-3 victory over Davenport on Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Freshman defender
Greg Fischer, senior midfielder
Callum Southern and freshman defender
Eddie Williamson also scored for Bellarmine (2-0), while senior midfielder
Nathan Jones, sophomore midfielder
Mitch Lammert and freshman midfielder
Jonas Skulstad racked up assists against Davenport (1-1), which won the NAIA national title in 2014 before transitioning to Division II this season.
After a high-scoring first half in which each team scored three goals, neither the Knights nor the Panthers managed to score in the second half. However, from the left wing in overtime, Skulstad crossed to Workman, who expertly headed the ball into the net in the 96th minute for the game-winner.
Workman was also a key component in the game-winning goal in Bellarmine's 2-1 double-overtime victory over Cedarville in its season debut, assisting on Southern's score.
The first half saw a tidal wave of goals. Fischer buried a free kick from 23 yards in the 12th minute for his first career goal for Bellarmine, and that was just a prelude to what was about to unfold. Davenport tied it up in the 16th minute on Brogan Shrimpton's goal, and the Panthers took the lead in the 24th minute on Stephen Carroll's score.
It took Bellarmine 20 seconds to knot it at 2-2 as Jones spotted Southern for his second goal of the season. The Knights then gained a 3-2 advantage in the 35th minute as Lammert found Williamson in the box, and the freshman delivered his first collegiate goal.
Less than two minutes later, Davenport's Daire O'Riordan deadlocked the match at 3-3 when he knocked in a rebound. That would be the last score until Workman's golden goal.
Davenport finished with a 19-17 edge in shots, including 8-7 on frame. Bellarmine junior goalkeeper
Zach Pogue entered to start the second half and collected three saves without allowing a goal. Pogue is 2-0 on the season.
Bellarmine opens Great Lakes Valley Conference action by playing Friday at Maryville before hosting Missouri S&T on Sunday.
