Knights men's soccer delivers 3-1 victory over Missouri S&T

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After trailing early, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team racked up three unanswered goals in a convincing 3-1 victory Sunday over Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Freshman midfielder Micah Linscott scored his first collegiate goal while senior forward Joe Workman and senior midfielder Callum Southern each found the net for Bellarmine (3-1, 1-1 GLVC) against Missouri S&T (1-2-1, 0-2). Freshman defender Greg Fischer collected two assists, and sophomore midfielder Mitch Lammert posted his third helper of the season.

After falling 5-0 to Maryville on Friday, Bellarmine didn't get off to a promising start against Missouri S&T, surrendering a goal in the eighth minute off a corner kick. However, after the goal, the Knights settled in and largely controlled the rest of the match.

Linscott knotted the contest at 1-1 in the 29th minute. The Miners' goalkeeper deflected Fischer's cross, and the ball caromed to an open Linscott, who rifled in the shot.

In the second half, Fischer tallied another assist when his cross found Workman near the far post, and Workman easily put away the shot for a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute. The goal proved to be Workman's second game-winner in the last three matches.

Southern added an insurance goal — his third of the season — when he received a pass from Lammert and nailed a shot from 12 yards in the 89th minute.

Bellarmine piled up a 24-6 advantage in shots, including 9-2 on frame. The Knights also had 11 corner kicks to four for the Miners. Bellarmine allowed a mere two shots in the second half.

Bellarmine hosts McKendree on Friday and Southern Indiana on Sunday.
