INDIANAPOLIS — Freshman forward
Natalie Teo and freshman midfielder
Samantha Ferry collected goals as the visiting Bellarmine University women's soccer team defeated Indianapolis 2-0 on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
It was the first goal of Teo's collegiate career while Ferry has already amassed a team-best four for Bellarmine (3-1-2, 2-1-2 GLVC), which went to double overtime in four of its first five matches but sealed the deal in regulation against Indianapolis (4-3, 3-2).
"That was a very big result for us today," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "It's early but we were in danger of making it very hard to challenge for one of the first-round home games in the conference tournament if we didn't get that result."
Bellarmine was shut out in its previous two matches, but Teo ended the drought when she scored in the 43rd minute for a 1-0 lead at halftime. After the break, Ferry added valuable insurance when she drove in a shot in the 78th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
"I thought especially the first half was our best of the year," Tinius said. "We created much better chances. We were a bit unlucky to not have a second or third goal at the half. It was cool to see Natalie get the game-winner in her home state. (Sophomore forward) Spencer (Grim) was able to do the same here last year. That's a pretty cool experience."
Senior goalkeeper
Taylor Smith and Bellarmine's defense picked up their third shutout of the season and second in a row. The Knights have not allowed a goal in regulation in the last four matches. Smith picked up five saves against Indianapolis.
Both teams registered 14 shots, but Bellarmine had a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also attempted seven corner kicks while the Greyhounds didn't have any opportunities.
"I thought we had a letdown to start the second half," Tinius said. "Once we found a group that got us settled, we did what we needed to get a second goal and see the game out. Credit to Indy. They were in a difficult spot with us being off on Friday, and they fought to the end. I think that also shows how good our tie against USI really was last Sunday (UIndy and USI tied 1-1 on Friday)."
Bellarmine plays Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside and Sunday at Lewis.
