NEWBERRY, S.C.--Bellarmine senior
Elle Lichte scored 4:58 into overtime to lift the Knights past the host Newberry Wolves 2-1 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Bellarmine opened the game's scoring in the first half when
Carly Anson converted on a penalty corner after her shot deflected off a defender's stick and into the cage. Newberry got the equalizer in the second period, also converting on a penalty corner.
Â
"The ball possession was back and forth with us and Newberry," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "We needed to play with a little more energy and discipline to gain more possessions of the ball. Newberry did a great job of putting pressure on us, drawing corners and making us jump."
Â
For the game, the Knights owned a 17-5 advantage in shots, but led just 10-9 in penalty corners.
Â
Lichte's game-winning shot came less than a minute after she came back on the field after being "yellow-carded" during the final minute of regulation. Â
Â
"When Elle came onto the field after serving the card, she was powerful and determined to get that ball in the cage," Blankenbaker said. "She did a great job today with cutting to the ball and passing to the forwards. Everyone fed off her."
Â
The win was Bellarmine's third consecutive ECAC victory and moved the Knights to an even 3-3 in league play while improving to 4-6 overall. The Wolves fell to 4-4, 1-3 ECAC.
Â
Bellarmine concludes its road trip with a 1 p.m. game tomorrow in Charlotte, North Carolina against the Royals of Queens University. Â
