LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Opportunity turned into missed opportunity Wednesday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team.
With the chance to clinch a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season title, the Knights fell 1-0 in double overtime to Indianapolis as the Greyhounds scored with less than four minutes remaining in the second extra session.
"That's obviously a disappointing result, especially to not come out with more intensity considering what was in front of us," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "We created plenty of chances, but we couldn't carry over the mindset in the attacking third that we saw last week (in consecutive 3-0 wins over William Jewell and Drury)."
Bellarmine closes out the regular season 9-5-3 overall and 7-3-3 in the GLVC. The Knights earned the five-seed in the GLVC Tournament and will play Sunday at four-seed Quincy in the quarterfinals. The win over Bellarmine capped the season for Indianapolis (9-7-2, 6-5-2), which didn't earn a berth in the GLVC Tournament.
After the teams went scoreless in regulation time and the first overtime, UIndy's Kaylee Zimbelmann had an open crease down the field. She took full advantage, dribbling toward the top right corner of the box before cutting to her left and firing a shot inside the far post for the "golden goal" in the 107th minute.
"Big picture, I told the team there's not much to be disappointed about," Tinius said. "We've been up and down all year. About every three or four days, we have a game or training session where we are generally good but don't quite have the same bite. When you do that against good teams, you can play OK and still lose."
Bellarmine has had some scoring issues in the second half of the season, and the Knights suffered their fourth shutout of the year against UIndy. Bellarmine had a 19-12 advantage in shots, including 8-4 on goal.
"Part of it, quite simply, is it was tougher today," Tinius said of the scoring struggles. "It was a tougher opponent and physically demanded more, and we weren't quite up for it. Credit Indy for wanting to make the most of their last game and getting it done."
Tinius wants his squad to maintain a positive outlook.
"We have to keep our heads up and know that with the right mentality we can beat anyone in the league and are fully capable of winning tournament games," Tinius said. "The only thing we need to worry about from this point is being ready for Sunday. We've given up one goal in about the last 500 minutes of soccer, so that's a great starting point."
