LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After battling to a scoreless tie at halftime, the visiting LIndenwood Lions got the early momentum in the second half and rode that to a 3-0 victory over Bellarmine on Friday night in a cold and rainy Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Despite a 7-2 shot disadvantage in the opening 35 minutes, the Knights appeared to be competing evenly with the Lions. However, just 1:13 into the second period, Lindenwood's Paline Terwindt found a seam in the Bellarmine defense and drove down the left side of the field and once in the circle fired a shot into the upper right portion of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Although Bellarmine had a couple of scoring opportunities to even the score, Lindenwood goalie Skylar Starback came up with two of her four saves in the game.
The Lions then went on the offensive and scored in transition as Jessie Londono drove the left sideline before crossing a pass just in front of the goal where Bridget Hoogendijk was waiting to poke it in.
This time, Lindenwood kept the momentum by scoring less than four minutes later when Terwindt drilled a shot off Hoogendijk's penalty corner insertion to put the Lions up 3-0 with 22 minutes remaining in the game.
The Knights never mounted a serious comeback as the home team got off just one more shot with that coming off a corner.
For the game, Lindenwood outshot the Knights 16-7 and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. Bellarmine goalie
Heather Gregory came up with five saves in just over 53 minutes of action.
Lindenwood improves to 11-3 on the season while the Knights slip to 6-8.
Bellarmine closes the home portion of its season on Saturday with a noon "Senior Day" contest against Queens (NC). Prior to the game, Bellarmine will honor the team's four seniors:
Dana Hemingway,
Caroline Krill,
Mollie Reese and
