LOUISVILLE, Ky.—It was a perfect ending for Bellarmine's home finale as
Lindsay Reynolds' goal two and a half minutes into the second overtime propelled the Knights to a 3-2 victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Playing in the seven on seven situation in the second overtime, Bellarmine's
Mandi Isom found herself in control of the ball with open field ahead of her. Isom dribbled all the way into the circle and as the goalie came out to challenge her, she shuffled a pass to Reynolds, who slipped the shot into the right side of the cage for the "golden goal" and victory for Bellarmine.
"What a way to get the win," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "It makes it special for our seniors," who were playing for the final time at home.
"Going into the second overtime, we talked about drawing the goalie out and passing to the back post," Blankenbaker said. "Mandi executed the play perfectly and Linsday finished it off."
The game was the second overtime battle between Queens and Bellarmine this year with the Royals pulling out a 5-4 win in extra time on September 29 in Charlotte.
Today's game also was tight throughout. While the Knights held a 20-14 shot advantage, Queens had three more corners (8-5) and three more saves (7-4).
Both teams played two goalies. For Bellarmine,
Breanna McWhorter picked up the win by working the second half and all of the 12:36 of overtime action. Lanie Walsh of Queens was saddled with the loss as she also was in cage for the final 47:36 of game time.
The final score was Bellarmine's only lead of the game as Queens drew first blood in the 21st minute when Maya Forbes scored for the Royals.
The Knights had a quick answer with Isom scoring on a breakaway in the game's 23rd minute, but Queens took a 2-1 halftime lead after Mazvita Mtisi drilled a shot on a penalty corner.
The only goal of the second period came when
Dana Hemingway fired the ball toward the goal from well outside the circle and Isom was able to get a touch on it for Bellarmine's second goal.
"Mandi had a huge weekend," Blankenbaker said. "She was fantastic last night in her field play, but just could not find the cage. Two goals and the game-winning assist today when we needed her."
Blankenbaker lauded the Bellarmine effort on little to no rest. "This was pretty much a gut-check win, coming off a very short turnaround to play two overtimes and win. I'm really happy with our team's effort and desire. Our seniors played well for their last appearance at Owsley Brown Frazier Stadium—as they have for four years.
The Knights improve to 7-8 on the year while Queens falls to 7-6.
Prior to the game, Bellarmine honored the team's four seniors (
Dana Hemingway,
Caroline Krill,
Mollie Reese and
Sara Wilder) in a brief ceremony.
