Stirring comeback in second half by Knights men's soccer turned back as USI answers late

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Down 2-0 in the second half, the visiting Bellarmine University men's soccer team made a valiant comeback in rallying to tie Southern Indiana, but the Screaming Eagles were able to answer with less than six minutes remaining to secure a 3-2 victory Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Sophomore midfielder Micah Linscott and junior forward Tomas Bernedo assisted to each other on the goals for Bellarmine (2-4-1, 1-2-1 GLVC), which concluded a seemingly endless seven-game road stretch to start the season. The scores came in the second half after USI (5-1-1, 3-0-1) had built a 2-0 lead.

Bellarmine cut that deficit in half in the 61st minute as Bernedo headed a free kick, and Linscott ripped in a shot for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Linscott returned the favor in the 69th minute. From near the end line, Linscott put expert touch on a chip pass to an unmarked Bernedo inside the goal area. In a controlled motion, Bernedo left his feet and struck the pass into the net for his second goal of the season as the Knights surged back to tie the match at 2.

Southern Indiana responded with an impressive goal of its own that proved to be the game-winner. A cross was rifled into the box from the right side, and Drew Domalewski headed it inside the far post for a 3-2 lead in the 85th minute.

USI's second goal also came on a dynamic play. A combination of passes, the last being a cross inside the box, led to Sean Rickey's second goal.

USI's first goal could be viewed as one that came back to bite Bellarmine. In the 15th minute, on a counterattack, Justin Raines connected with a wide open Rickey streaking down the left side. Rickey followed by calmly draining his first goal of the game.

Bellarmine's offense in the second half was relentless and sharp. In addition to the goals by Linscott and Bernedo, Linscott was a little wide on a shot and freshman forward Laslo Wanger was a little off on a header, with both dangerous chances initiated by precise passes. The Knights had a 13-4 superiority in shots in the second half.

Overall, Bellarmine finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots, including 5-4 on goal.

Bellarmine will at last play at home as the Knights host Quincy on Friday and Illinois Springfield next Sunday.
