LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team followed its emotional victory Friday over reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season champion Quincy with a solid 1-0 win Sunday over Illinois Springfield.
Junior forward
Kenzi Gooley broke the scoreless deadlock at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in the 75th minute in posting the game-winning goal for Bellarmine (6-3-1, 4-1-1 GLVC). The Knights' defense recorded its fifth shutout of the season while limiting Illinois Springfield (1-7-2, 1-5) to three shots.
"It's good to put an entire weekend together again," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Springfield is a good team — much better than the record indicates. We said before the game that they are going to get some more wins before the season is over — make sure it's not against us."
Gooley scored for the second straight game. The Knights threatened throughout the match but came up empty until late in the second half. After a cross toward the center of the box, Bellarmine had a shot blocked, but Gooley was in perfect position for a follow-up. She laced a shot from 15 yards inside the left post as the Knights finally broke through for a 1-0 lead.
"What a weekend for
Kenzi Gooley getting another one today," Tinius said. "She's a great example of the philosophy we have to take with this team: different people on different days based on the form they are in and the matchups we have. Kenzi is a kid that we needed to play out of position in a different system last week, and she helped us get a big win at McKendree playing as a wingback. This week she's back in the attack contributing with two goals. She was ready for her moments."
Gooley provided the one moment offensively Bellarmine needed to collect the win. The Knights' defense allowed just two shots in the second half and one in the first — that look before halftime was a near miss by UIS as it caromed off the crossbar.
Bellarmine finished with 19 shots, including six on frame. The Knights had 10 shots in the first half and nine after the intermission.
"I thought it was a group effort again and it had to be," Tinius said. "Friday (against Quincy) took a lot out of us, and we were able to manage it and get a win. That's a big step for us. I felt like we knocked the ball around better in the first half, but we had a bit more purpose in and around the box in the second half and it made a difference."
Bellarmine hosts Lewis on Friday and Rockhurst on Sunday.
