LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team started one streak and continued another.
On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights scored with 17 seconds left before halftime and added another goal in the second half of a 2-0 win over Illinois Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Sunday's victory followed Friday's 3-2 triumph over Quincy, giving Bellarmine (4-4-1, 3-2-1 GLVC) its first winning streak this season. The Knights extended their winning streak at Frazier Stadium to 13. Sophomore defender
Eddie Williamson and sophomore midfielder
Micah Linscott scored against Illinois Springfield (4-4-2, 3-2-1), while sophomore midfielder
Drew Goetz and junior forward
Tomas Bernedo tallied assists.
Bellarmine dominated the shot count in the first half, 13-1, but the Knights were particularly unlucky plays apart as they hit the post and then the crossbar with attempts. The breakthrough came with less than a minute left in the half, as Goetz redirected a deflection toward Williamson at the top of the goal area. Williamson knocked the ball down with his chest and whipped in a shot for a 1-0 lead with 17 seconds remaining before halftime. It was his first goal of the season.
Bellarmine attempted only two shots in the second half, but the Knights converted on one of them. In the 63rd minute, Bernedo worked toward the end line and sent a cross inside the goal area. Linscott made a hard cut in front of a defender and tapped in the pass for a 2-0 lead.
The goal was Linscott's team-high fifth of the season. The assist marked Bernedo's team-best third of the year. Linscott scored for the third match in a row. It was also the third consecutive game Bernedo accounted for either a goal, assist or both.
Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Range registered six saves and his third shutout. Bellarmine finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots.
The Knights host Lewis on Friday and Rockhurst on Sunday.
