SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The No. 17 Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored the equalizer with less than eight minutes remaining and proceeded to play to a 1-1 draw with Illinois Springfield on Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Kiwanis Stadium.
Junior midfielder
Micah Linscott scored in the 83rd minute for Bellarmine (7-0-3, 4-0-3 GLVC), which pushed its unbeaten streak to 19 dating back to last season. Junior defender
Eddie Williamson and junior midfielder
Jonathan Huerta both notched assists against the Prairie Stars (5-4-2, 3-3-2), who remained unbeaten at home (4-0-2).
After neither team scored in the first half, Illinois Springfield got on the board in the 67th minute on a goal by Evan Paoni.
With the clock ticking under eight minutes, Huerta sent a corner kick toward the middle of the box. Williamson struck it forward with a header, and Linscott was there to redirect it into the net for his third goal of the season. Huerta tallied an assist for the third straight game, while Williamson collected his second helper of the year.
Illinois Springfield had a pair of close chances in the first overtime, including a shot inside the first 30 seconds that slid just left of the post. Inside the last minute, Bellarmine senior forward
Tomas Bernedo stole the ball from a defender and created an open look for a teammate, who couldn't quite strike his shot cleanly. Those opportunities perhaps represented the closest the teams got to delivering the golden goal in the extra sessions.
For the match, there weren't a ton of attempts: Bellarmine had a 12-11 advantage in shots, including 6-4 on goal. The Knights had a 10-7 edge at the end of regulation.
Bellarmine plays at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Lewis.
