No. 14 men's soccer scores 5 first-half goals, rolls to 6-0 win over Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. — There was no messing around here.

On Sunday at Plaster Stadium, the No. 14 Bellarmine University men's soccer team took care of business early, racking up five goals in the first half en route to a 6-0 romp over Southwest Baptist in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Senior forward Tomas Bernedo and freshman forward Juan Ballas scored two goals each for Bellarmine (10-0-3, 7-0-3 GLVC), which lifted its unbeaten streak to 22 dating back to last season. Junior midfielder Greg Fischer and senior midfielder Donald Aviles notched one goal apiece against the Bearcats (1-12, 1-10), while Fischer, junior midfielders Collin Rose and Micah Linscott, freshman midfielder Jackson Snowden, sophomore defender Nate Girao and junior defender Tyler Niemann recorded one assist each.

Bellarmine's six goals were the most it has scored since a 9-0 road demolishing of Kentucky Wesleyan in September of 2011. The Knights' previous high this season was five in a 5-1 victory over Southern Indiana on Sept. 22 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine seemed to feel out Southwest Baptist for a while in the first half before ambushing the Bearcats. The Knights scored four goals inside a 10-minute span and added a fifth shortly before halftime in building an insurmountable 5-0 advantage at the break.

Bernedo scored the first two goals for Bellarmine. He headed in a corner kick from Rose in the 21st minute and finished a perfectly timed cross from Fischer in the 24th minute. The goals were the eighth and ninth of the season for Bernedo; he registered his fifth game-winner as a result of the opening score.

Fischer made it 3-0 Bellarmine in the 26th minute after ripping in a shot off a Linscott feed for his fourth goal of the season. Less than five minutes later, Aviles found the net for the first time this year off a pass from Snowden.

Ballas converted a pair of long passes from Bellarmine defenders into goals. The first, from Girao, came in the 43rd minute, as Ballas fought off a defender and slotted a shot past the goalkeeper for a 5-0 lead. The freshman scored again after halftime, this time capitalizing on Niemann's long lead pass for his fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute.

Bellarmine finished with a 25-3 advantage in shots, including 15-2 on frame. The defense posted its fifth shutout.

Bellarmine hosts Maryville at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Friday.
