LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A top-25 showdown between the Bellarmine University men's soccer team and Maryville ended in a 1-1 stalemate Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Junior defender
Drew Goetz scored a first-half goal for No. 10 Bellarmine (10-0-4, 7-0-4 GLVC), which pushed its unbeaten streak to 23 dating back to last season. Senior midfielder
Mitch Lammert and senior forward
Tomas Bernedo tallied assists on the Goetz goal against the No. 24 Saints (11-2-2, 8-2-2).
Bellarmine controlled the first half and took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Lammert lofted a free kick that was first headed by Bernedo and then by Goetz, who found the net for the first time this season.
Bellarmine, however, could have easily held a multiple-goal lead at the intermission as the Knights racked up 13 shots to only three for the Saints. Bellarmine also had some chances early in the second half to add an insurance goal but couldn't capitalize on the opportunities.
Although Bellarmine outshot Maryville 8-5 in the second half, the Saints seemed to control a large portion of the frame after the early going. A Knights defensive lapse freed up Helmut Florencia inside the box, and he found teammate Grady Schliepsiek for the tying goal in the 66th minute.
Bellarmine regrouped at the end of regulation, which saw the teams head to overtime deadlocked at 1-1. Particularly in the second extra session, the Knights applied a lot of pressure and dictated play, but the Saints managed to hold them off.
Bellarmine finished with a decisive 25-10 advantage in shots, including 9-3 on frame. While the Knights scored on a set piece, they had a heap of others fizzle out; Bellarmine attempted 11 corner kicks to the three of Maryville.
Bellarmine hosts Missouri S&T at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
