LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It seemed like the soggier it got, the more successfully the No. 22 Bellarmine University men's soccer team performed.
On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights erased an early deficit with three unanswered goals in collecting a 3-1 victory over Lindenwood in rain-soaked Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Freshman forward
Juan Ballas, junior defender
Eddie Williamson and senior forward
Tomas Bernedo netted goals for Bellarmine (7-0-2, 4-0-2 GLVC), which boosted its unbeaten streak to 18 dating back to last season. Senior defender
Chris Hunt, junior midfielder
Micah Linscott, junior midfielder
Jonathan Huerta and freshman midfielder
Camden Dunne tallied assists against Lindenwood (3-4-2, 2-3-2).
Luke McBeth scored his sixth goal of the season off an assist from Gaspar Alvarez as Lindenwood jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Heavy rain began to fall in the latter stage of the first half, but that seemed to have no negative impact on Bellarmine's attack — the Knights have been accustomed to playing in poor weather of late after experiencing multiple delays the previous weekend on a road trip to Quincy and Truman State.
In the 40th minute, Bellarmine delivered the equalizer. Hunt spotted Linscott, who used a nifty back-kick to pass the ball to a streaking Ballas on the right side. He slotted his open shot inside the near post for his second goal of the season.
Less than one minute into the second half, Bellarmine took a 2-1 lead. Williamson finished a Huerta free kick for his third goal of the season.
Bellarmine tacked on an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Dunne found Bernedo in the box, and he fired in his sixth goal of the year for a 3-1 lead. It was the first assist, and first point, of Dunne's career.
Bellarmine's defense held strong after Lindenwood's early goal despite injury and ineffectiveness leading to a shakeup on the back line. Williamson and Hunt were joined by juniors
Logan Hankamer,
Drew Goetz and
Tyler Niemann as the Knights shut out the Lions for roughly the last 79 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Range registered four saves.
Bellarmine finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots, including 6-5 on frame. The Knights had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Bellarmine begins a four-game road trip Friday by playing at Illinois Springfield.
