No. 12 men's soccer bulldozes William Jewell in 8-1 victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It started with a successful penalty kick. And then it didn't stop.

On Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the No. 12 Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored four goals in each half in throttling William Jewell 8-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Senior forward Tomas Bernedo and freshman forward Juan Ballas scored two goals apiece for Bellarmine (12-0-4, 9-0-4 GLVC), which racked up its highest-scoring output of the season and most since a 9-0 thrashing of Kentucky Wesleyan in September of 2011. Freshman midfielders Camden Dunne and Andrew Minnis scored their first collegiate goals for the Knights, who have tied the single-season program record for wins and whose unbeaten streak climbed to 25 dating back to last season.

Junior midfielder Micah Linscott and junior defender Drew Goetz added one goal each for Bellarmine, while senior midfielder Mark Lanham tallied two assists and junior midfielder Jonathan Huerta, junior defender Jonas Skulstad, sophomore midfielder Tanner Stevens and freshman midfielder Patrick O'Neil collected one helper apiece.

The parade of goals began in the 10th minute when a Knight was fouled inside the box, and Bernedo sank the ensuing penalty kick. Bernedo added his second goal in the 20th minute, burying a shot after stealing the ball from the defense. The scores were the 10th and 11th of the season for Bernedo, who also recorded his sixth game-winning goal.

Linscott made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute when he corralled a deflection of his pass in the box and fired a shot inside the far post for his seventh goal of the season. Goetz then capped Bellarmine's first-half scoring in the 39th minute when he drove in a header off a Huerta free kick.

It took a mere 11 seconds for Bellarmine to add to its lead in the second half. Just after the kickoff, Skulstad blasted a long pass to Lanham down the right side and he found Ballas, who slotted his shot inside the near post for a 5-0 lead.

In the 57th minute, Dunne scored his first collegiate goal. Lanham nudged the ball to him in front of the goal after a cross by Stevens. Less than three minutes later, Minnis put away his first goal as a Knight, cleaning up a deflection.

Ballas finished off the scoring for Bellarmine in the 62nd minute when he headed in a service from O'Neil. The two goals boosted Ballas' season total to six. William Jewell scored its goal in the 67th minute when Bellarmine led 8-0.

Bellarmine will look to seal an unbeaten regular season when the Knights host Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday, which also represents Senior Day.
