Women's basketball heads to Central State for first road game of season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team will play its first road game of the season when the Knights visit Central State for a 3:30 p.m. (ET) contest Saturday.

Bellarmine (1-1) will face the Marauders (1-2) in Wilberforce, Ohio after opening the season with two games at home in the Midwest Region Crossover. The Knights split against their pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponents, defeating Ohio Dominican 82-71 on Friday before falling 77-64 to Cedarville on Saturday.

In the former game, Bellarmine pulled away from the Panthers late in the fourth quarter with an 11-1 run. The opposite happened in the latter contest, as the Yellow Jackets used a 12-0 run late in the fourth period to distance themselves from the Knights.

Breia Torrens set new career highs for scoring in each game. The junior guard posted 20 points against Ohio Dominican and 23 against Cedarville. Senior center Ally Mayhaus also had an impressive showing in the Crossover, averaging 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.

Junior guard Tasia Jeffries, in her second game with the Knights, nailed four 3-pointers while scoring 13 points against Cedarville. Junior forward Lauren Deel registered 10 points and nine rebounds against Ohio Dominican, and senior forward Mallory Schwartz had 15, six and three steals in the same game.

Central State will welcome Bellarmine for its home opener. The Marauders played Wednesday night, falling 78-70 at Wayne State. Central State opened the season with two games in Florida and suffered an 80-71 loss to Lynn before defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 62-56.

Takyra Gilbert and Brooke Spaulding are both averaging 14.3 points for Central State. Gilbert has knocked down half of her 16 3-point attempts. Bri'elle Johnson is averaging 13.3 points. That trio, along with Sandra Guilford, are all averaging at least 30 minutes of playing time per game. The Marauders are averaging 11 steals per contest.
