LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Knights women's basketball team finished the Bellarmine Thanksgiving Classic exactly how it started the two-day hoopfest.
On Saturday in Knights Hall, Bellarmine built a commanding 40-27 halftime lead and countered when Tampa made a third-quarter run in rolling to a 76-63 victory highlighted by sizzling shooting from behind the arc.
Junior guard
Breia Torrens scored all of her game-high 17 points in the first half for Bellarmine (3-2), which swept its Thanksgiving Classic contests after defeating Trevecca Nazarene 70-60 on Friday. Senior forward
Mallory Schwartz added 10 points and four steals against Tampa (2-3), while senior guard
Mikayla Berry collected six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
"As far as the intensity and the difference of scouting the teams — they were totally different — and that was a really good team we beat today," Knights Coach
Chancellor Dugan said.
The Knights buried 12 of their 25 3-point attempts for a 48-percent clip that's easily a season best thus far. Torrens nailed a trio of trifectas and Schwartz, junior guard
Tasia Jeffries and sophomore guard
Bailee Harney drained two each. Bellarmine spread them out, sinking four 3s in the first quarter, two in the second, three in the third and three in the fourth to make it difficult for Tampa to rally.
Torrens poured in 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3 of 6 from deep, in leading Bellarmine to a 40-27 lead at halftime. In a revealing stat, Tampa shot a torrid 66.7 percent (6 of 9) in the first quarter but still found itself trailing 22-15. In addition to Torrens' hot hand, the Knights racked up a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half as they forced 12 and committed only five.
Tampa made a comeback in the third quarter, slicing its deficit to 44-39 with 4 minutes left in the period. However, Bellarmine regrouped and responded with a 13-1 to close the frame. Jeffries, Harney and sophomore guard
Kathleen Scott all knocked down 3-pointers during the decisive run, with Scott concluding it with a tough driving layup moments before the buzzer.
"I thought we were really intense in the second half overall, but there was about a three-minute span in the third where we weren't," Dugan said. "We talked about it at the media timeout and things changed. That's the mark of a team that wants to be coached."
Berry and Schwartz canned back-to-back 3-pointers as Bellarmine's lead swelled to 19 about four minutes into the fourth quarter. Tampa, led by 16 points from Melijah Sullivan, never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Bellarmine shot 50 percent for the game and had a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers as Tampa recorded 20. The Knights had a 31-13 advantage in bench points. Bellarmine accumulated 14 steals and 18 assists. Harney and Scott both had three helpers, and both made all three of their shots.
"I thought we did a little too much one-on-one in the first half, but I really liked how we shared the ball in the second half," Dugan said.
Bellarmine opens GLVC play with a 5:30 p.m. (ET) contest Tuesday at Indianapolis.
