LEXINGTON, Ky. — Battling some health issues, the Bellarmine University men's tennis team grinded out a 5-4 victory Friday night over Georgetown College at the Lexington Top Seed Tennis Club.
Sophomores
Evan Bottorff and
Sam Rueff notched a pair of victories for Bellarmine (3-2), which has won three straight matches. Freshmen
Caleb Buckman and
Michael Staff and sophomore
Joseph Naville collected one win each against the Tigers (1-2).
Bellarmine led 2-1 after doubles play as Buckman and Rueff secured an 8-5 victory over Cole McCreary and Phillip Hoeper at No. 1, and Bottorff and Staff triumphed 8-3 over Hunter Nosek and Isaac Mathis at No. 2.
Bellarmine sealed the win with victories in three of the singles matches. Bottorff clipped Nosek 7-6, 6-1 at No. 2, Rueff took down Kaushik Kailish 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and Naville edged Mathis 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.
"It was ugly at times but a win is a win, and I'm proud of the guys for finding a way," Knights Coach
Tyler Worley said. "The flu/injury bug hit us pretty hard this week, so we were lucky to sneak this one out. We had to refocus quickly for our match Saturday against an extremely talented Lincoln Memorial team."
