LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team's preseason exhibition slate ended in disappointing fashion Friday night as the Knights were defeated 2-1 by Spalding at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Two days after beating Hanover 5-0, Bellarmine managed to muster one second-half goal while the Golden Eagles scored twice after the intermission. Senior forward
Tomas Bernedo collected the goal for the Knights, his third in the two exhibition games. Freshman midfielder
Camden Dunne notched an assist.
Bellarmine carried a 25-9 advantage in shots, with an 11-4 edge in the first half and a 14-5 superiority in the second stanza. However, Spalding, which went 14-4-1 last season, capitalized on a pair of prime chances in the second half.
Alioune Cisse got Spalding on the board when he found the net in the 60th minute.
Bellarmine knotted it at 1-1 roughly 10 minutes later. Dunne headed a pass toward Bernedo at the top of the goal area, and Bernedo knocked a header off the far post and into the net.
Spalding took the lead back in the 78th minute. Kornell Hilliard tracked down a lead pass from Cisse and maneuvered around the Knights' charging goalkeeper, sinking a shot into the open net.
Bellarmine wasn't able to deliver the equalizer.
The Knights are off until Sept. 5 when they host Ohio Dominican in their regular-season opener.
