INDIANAPOLIS — In a Great Lakes Valley Conference opener between two teams expected to be league heavyweights, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team and No. 13 Indianapolis did nothing to diminish their statuses.
Nor did one allow the other to get the best of Sunday's contest at Key Stadium.
Indianapolis scored about 10 minutes into the match and Bellarmine delivered the equalizer with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation as the Knights and Greyhounds played to a 1-1 draw.
Junior midfielder
Greg Fischer scored the goal for Bellarmine (3-0-1, 0-0-1 GLVC), which extended its unbeaten streak to 13 dating back to last season. The Knights were coming off a demanding 1-0 victory over 2017 national champion Charleston on Wednesday and collected another positive result by tying the top-15 Greyhounds (2-0-1, 0-0-1).
Indianapolis struck quickly, as Vincent Stone assisted to Alejandro Steinwascher for a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Steinwascher's goal stood unmatched by Bellarmine for much of the rest of the contest, but the Knights knotted it up at 1-1 on Fischer's penalty kick in the 81st minute.
There was a minimal amount of shots taken in the two overtimes. In fact, Bellarmine attempted the only two — one in each extra session.
Indianapolis had a slight 13-11 advantage in shots for the game, but Bellarmine held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at seven each. Sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Range notched four saves for the Knights.
Bellarmine hosts McKendree at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Friday.
