LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team played stifling defense and scored twice in the second half as the Knights opened their 2019 campaign Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Ohio Dominican at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Senior forward
Tomas Bernedo and senior midfielder
Gilio Aviles collected the goals for Bellarmine (1-0), which ran its unbeaten streak to 10 dating back to last season. Junior defender
Eddie Williamson, senior midfielder
Mitch Lammert and junior midfielder
Micah Linscott tallied assists for the Knights against the Panthers (0-1).
Bellarmine's defense walled off Ohio Dominican's attack until the offense located the net a pair of times after the intermission. The Knights allowed a mere two shots — one in each half — and none were on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Connor Range posted the shutout.
Following a scoreless first half, Bellarmine took control after the break. In the 60th minute, Lammert passed the ball to Williamson inside the box, and he tapped the ball forward to Bernedo, who slotted a shot inside the near post.
As Bellarmine's defense kept nearly every threat at bay, the Knights tacked on an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Linscott had a shot stopped by Ohio Dominican's goalkeeper, but it deflected to Aviles for an easy look from 8 yards, which he drilled.
Bellarmine had a decisive 16-2 advantage in shots, with seven coming on goal. The Knights had seven attempts in the first half and nine in the second.
Bellarmine will host Trevecca Nazarene at 3:55 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
