Women's basketball commands fourth quarter, pulls away from USI in 66-45 romp

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Junior guard Breia Torrens had another prolific scoring night, senior center Ally Mayhaus recorded a double-double and the visiting Bellarmine University women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter in pulling away from archrival Southern Indiana for a decisive 66-45 victory Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Two days after piling up a career-high 34 points in an overtime road triumph over McKendree, Torrens racked up a game-best 20 points for Bellarmine (8-4, 3-2 GLVC), which has won five of its last six. Mayhaus made a significant impact off the bench, registering 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and adding 10 rebounds against USI (7-4, 3-2).

Junior guard Tasia Jeffries chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while senior forward Mallory Schwartz hauled in nine rebounds for the Knights, whose 48.1 percent shooting was close to their season high of 50 percent set against Tampa on Nov. 30. Bellarmine canned 9-of-12 shots in a commanding fourth quarter in which it outscored USI 25-10.

"There were times we really moved the ball and looked great," Knights Coach Chancellor Dugan said.

"Great" could also be used to describe the defensive and rebounding efforts of Bellarmine. The Knights limited USI to only 31 percent shooting — and just 14.3 percent (3 of 21) from 3-point land — using a variety of defenses and outrebounded the Screaming Eagles 42-29.

"I thought what we did as far as changing up defenses kept them off balance. They couldn't get in a rhythm," Dugan said. "Overall, I was so pleased with our rebounding effort tonight. When our guards are rebounding, it makes a world of difference."

Bellarmine outscored USI in every quarter. The Knights led 12-10 after the first, 25-22 at halftime and 41-35 after three periods.

Torrens opened the fourth quarter by drilling a jumper and a step-back 3-pointer. That triggered a 9-0 run that boosted Bellarmine's lead to 50-35 with 7:11 left. The advantage didn't dip below 13 thereafter as the Knights owned the final period.

Bellarmine will host Missouri-St. Louis at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Thursday.

"It doesn't get any easier," Dugan said. "We've got to continue to get sharper on both ends."
