Women's basketball takes it to Tritons, captures 70-52 victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four players scored in double figures and the Bellarmine University women's basketball continued rolling behind a 70-52 victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Knights Hall.

Sophomore forward Alisha Owens hit 5-of-6 shots in collecting 12 points with six rebounds off the bench for Bellarmine (9-4, 4-2 GLVC), which has won six of its last seven games. Junior guards Breia Torrens and Tasia Jeffries chipped in 11 points apiece, senior guard Mikayla Berry added 10 and senior forward Mallory Schwartz pulled down 10 rebounds against the Tritons (6-9, 1-5).

Bellarmine shot 48.1 percent and six different Knights had at least two assists, led by the four of Jeffries.

"We set good screens and shared the ball," Knights Coach Chancellor Dugan said. "I thought our guards did a good job of getting into the paint and dumping off."

A phenomenal second quarter played a big part in the victory for Bellarmine. The Knights outscored Missouri-St. Louis 24-12 in the period after shooting nearly 70 percent (9 of 13) in the frame. Torrens sent Bellarmine into the locker room with a 37-25 lead after sinking a jumper with seven seconds left.

Missouri-St. Louis opened the third quarter strong and used a 10-3 run to cut Bellarmine's lead to five about three minutes into the period. However, the Knights countered, as Torrens and senior forward Allison Van Dyke stroked back-to-back 3-pointers in pushing the lead back to 13. After that Bellarmine response, Missouri-St. Louis never got closer than 12 and the advantage swelled to 20 in the fourth quarter.

Bellarmine limited UMSL to 36.2 percent shooting. Led by Schwartz, who's tallied seven rebounds or more in each of the last five games, the Knights had a 35-30 edge on the boards.

"I thought we did a good job on the boards. I've been harping on that for the last month and a half," Dugan said. "We took the lead because we rebounded the basketball."

This is a busy week of play for Bellarmine. The Knights play at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Lindenwood before hosting Indianapolis at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
