Women's basketball falters in fourth in falling to Lindenwood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped Saturday as the Knights were defeated 78-67 by Lindenwood at Robert F. Hyland Arena in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior guard Breia Torrens scored 21 points for Bellarmine (9-5, 4-3 GLVC), which had won six of its last seven games before facing Lindenwood (8-5, 4-3). Sophomore forward Alisha Owens registered 17 points and junior guard Tasia Jeffries chipped in 12.

Bellarmine often commands fourth quarters against opponents, but Lindenwood outscored the Knights 26-16 in the final period. The Lions made seven of their 10 shots in the frame to complete a torrid shooting effort in the second half where they shot 69.6 percent. Lindenwood shot 56.5 percent for the game as Kallie Bildner scored 24 points with 12 rebounds, and Lindsay Medlen added 18 points.

Bellarmine trailed 22-13 after the first quarter but trimmed its deficit to 34-31 at halftime and then grabbed a 49-46 lead in the third period on a Torrens jumper. Lindenwood held a 52-51 edge heading into the fourth after the back-and-forth frame.

In the final quarter, Bellarmine was within two possessions with 5:50 left after a Jeffries 3-pointer, but Lindenwood followed with an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 70-58 with 3:39 remaining. The Knights got no closer than six the rest of the way.

"We took questionable shots," Coach Chancellor Dugan said of the stretch where the Knights fell behind by double digits. "We weren't patient. When we took questionable shots, they made us pay."

Lindenwood also made Bellarmine pay with a decisive 37-21 rebounding advantage. In addition, the Lions had 31 free-throw attempts, hitting 21, while the Knights had only 13 chances, sinking 10.

"They kicked our butts on the boards. That's an area where we had been playing well," Dugan said. "But I think we played as hard as we could. I think we got frustrated, and that frustration showed."

Bellarmine hosts Indianapolis at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Monday.
