LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After his squad swept Florida Gulf Coast, Coach
Scott Davenport said there's nothing in college basketball more satisfying than a road win.
That's not to say that a home victory isn't something to savor as well — particularly the first Division I conference home win in program history.
On Friday evening, the Bellarmine University men's basketball team erased a 10-point second-half deficit in rallying for a 67-62 triumph over Stetson that marked its first-ever ASUN win in Freedom Hall.
"I thought our team played with incredible poise possession by possession," Davenport said. "We didn't try to catch up all at once."
Senior guard
CJ Fleming buried three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and scored a team-high 16 points for Bellarmine (6-5, 3-2 ASUN), which has won three straight games. In addition, Fleming tied a career high with six rebounds against the Hatters (4-7, 2-3).
Senior forward
Ethan Claycomb, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in scoring 14 points with a career-high four blocks while junior guard
Pedro Bradshaw supplied 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Junior guard
Dylan Penn hauled in a game- and career-high eight rebounds.
Bellarmine trailed 34-27 at halftime and 42-32 with 15:52 left in the second half. A little over three minutes later, the Knights seized the lead after an 11-0 run that was jump-started by a pair of baskets by sophomore guard
Alec Pfriem, featured a dunk by Bradshaw and was capped by a transition 3-pointer from Fleming.
With less than seven minutes left, the score was knotted at 50 when Claycomb stroked consecutive 3-pointers, and Bellarmine maintained an advantage the rest of the way. It went down to the wire as Penn sank two clutch free throws, and Bradshaw elevated high for a jumper in the paint to give the Knights a 62-59 lead with 1:53 left.
Two possessions later, Claycomb swatted his fourth shot of the game, and Fleming nailed a back-breaking 3-pointer with 11 seconds left for a 65-59 lead. Stetson got a favorable roll in hitting a 3-pointer with 6 seconds remaining, but junior guard
Juston Betz sealed the historic win by draining a pair of free throws.
Bellarmine shot 55.6 percent in the second half and hit six of its 10 3-point attempts in the stanza. The Knights finished with a 34-29 rebounding advantage and limited Stetson to 36 percent shooting in the second half.
"I thought our rebounding in the second half created our offense, we got stops that created offense," Davenport said. "We had a lot of the same looks in the first half that we did in the second half, we just hit them."
Bellarmine will host Stetson again at 5 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
"They have talented, talented players," Davenport said. "Our respect level for this league grows every game."
