JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Draws typically aren't all that satisfying to begin with, but the Bellarmine University women's soccer team's 1-1 stalemate Sunday with Jacksonville State definitely left the Knights wanting more.
A lot more.
In the ASUN West Division matchup at the JSU Soccer Complex, Bellarmine (3-5-6, 1-4-1 ASUN, 0-1-1 West) had extreme advantages in shots — 16-3 — and corner kicks — 16-1 — but the Knights had to settle for a deadlock against the Gamecocks (6-7-2, 2-3-1, 0-1-1).
Bellarmine did manage to score off one of those corner kicks. In the 19th minute, trailing 1-0, freshman defender
Katie Gawrys buried a header from senior midfielder
Sarah Buse off the set piece. It was the second goal of the season for Gawrys and the third assist for Buse.
Jacksonville State had taken a 1-0 lead about six minutes before that on its own set piece. Kylie Wells launched a free kick that Reilly Kucko converted for an early advantage.
As the game wore on, Bellarmine dictated more and more of the play. The Knights had six shots in the first half, six shots in the second stanza and four more in the first overtime.
Bellarmine wasn't credited with a shot in the second overtime, but the Knights appeared to have at least one chance near the left post in the final minute, leading to another of the 16 corner kicks. The Jacksonville State goalkeeper handled what appeared to be another Bellarmine attempt at the tail end of the set piece.
After opening the season with five straight draws, the Knights had gone eight games without a tie before Sunday.
Bellarmine will play at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday at North Alabama in ASUN divisional action.
