BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — The Bellarmine University swimming teams opened their seasons this weekend at Gardner-Webb.
The women's team competed against the Runnin' Bulldogs and UNC Asheville in a Double Dual on Friday. Garner-Webb defeated Bellarmine 192-60, while UNC Asheville captured a 201-60 victory against the Knights.
On the men's side, Gardner-Webb topped BU 198-64 in a dual meet.
The women's team started off its meet well with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore
Caroline McMillin, freshman
Alexandra Pierce, senior
Rachel Walker, and sophomore
Grace Lough teamed up for a time of 1:51.71.
The Knights tallied second and third place finishes in the individual competition. In Pierce's first career meet, she was the runner-up in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.36). Walker earned third place in the 200 freestyle (1:58.17). Bellarmine also produced four fourth place finishes – Pierce in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.32), junior
Anna Holt in the 200 butterfly (2:14.10), McMillin in the 200 backstroke (2:15:11), and Walker in the 100 butterfly (59.31).
On the men's side, senior and reigning conference champion
Matthew Sims continued his dominance in the 200 butterfly with another first place finish (1:54.32). He also led from start to finish in the 400 individual medley, collecting another first place time (4:14.82). Junior
Jacob Dray raced to second place in the 100 butterfly (51.77), while freshman
Brandon Thomas earned second in the 200 breaststroke in a fantastic race to the wall. Thomas beat Gardner-Webb's Austin Wheeler by one one-hundredth of a second (2:12.99) highlighting his first career meet. Sophomore
Greyson Williams hit the wall for third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.23) and 500 freestyle (4:56.32). Junior
Adham Howaidy placed third in the 100 backstroke (54.05).
The Bellarmine men's and women's teams will compete in their first home meets on Oct. 30. The men's side has a dual with Centre College, while the women's side will battle Centre and Butler in a double dual.
