LEXINGTON, Ky. — No. 5 Kentucky scored once in each half and held off a late rally by the Bellarmine University men's soccer team in defeating the Knights 2-1 on Tuesday night at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.
With less than five minutes left, sophomore forward
Nolan McGrath scored off an assist from junior midfielder
Camden Dunne for Bellarmine (6-7-1), which wrapped up the nonconference portion of its schedule against the unbeaten Wildcats (10-0-4).
Nick Gutmann scored both of UK's goals. The first came in the 16th minute when he drove in a rebound that barely crossed the line before Bellarmine senior defender
Nate Girao knocked it out with a spectacular diving effort. It initially appeared as if Girao made a highlight-reel defensive save, but the play was reviewed on video and Gutmann was awarded the goal.
Kentucky took the 1-0 lead into halftime before Gutmann upped it to 2-0 in the 73rd minute with a strong run up the right side and shot inside the far post.
Bellarmine didn't go quietly. In the 86th minute, Dunne curled a free kick just outside the top left corner of the box to McGrath, who slotted a one touch inside the near post to cut the deficit in half. It was McGrath's third goal of the season.
Kentucky held off the Knights in the last few minutes. The Wildcats finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots, but they were even at three apiece on frame.
Bellarmine will host Jacksonville in its ASUN and regular-season finale at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
