Bellarmine field hockey falls 5-0 at Miami OH in MAC finale

OXFORD, Ohio — Bellarmine field hockey fell 5-0 at Miami OH on Friday afternoon rounding out its MAC schedule in the fall of 2021.

The Redhawks got off to a quick start with a Morgan Sturm goal seven minutes into the game.  MAC scoring leader Claudia Negrete Garcia followed with her 17th goal of the season less than five minutes later.

The Knights would hold Miami scoreless the rest of the first and entire second quarter thanks to a pair of saves from Breanna McWhorter and a couple of shots off the post.  Bellarmine entered halftime still within striking distance down 2-0.

Miami's early second half surge, however, ultimately sealed the game.  Luli Rosso tallied a goal 37 seconds into the third quarter, and Sturm scored her second goal of the game two minutes later. With seven minutes to go in the third, the Redhawks struck again, pushing their lead to 5-0.

The score would remain 5-0 as Miami clinched its fifth straight MAC regular season title and number one seed in the MAC tournament.

McWhorter made eight saves for the Knights, extending her streak to eight consecutive games with seven or more saves.

Sophomore goalkeeper Danni Swallow also got some action playing 15 minutes in the cage.

Miami out-shot Bellarmine 29-2 with Anna Crump and Marit van der Bend taking the shots for the Knights.

The Knights drop to 3-12 this year and wrap up their season on Sunday.  Bellarmine hosts Saint Francis University in a non-conference matchup at Frazier Stadium on campus.  With game-time at 12:00 p.m., the Knights will honor McWhorter and Cassidy Sweeney pre-game on Senior Day.  The game will also be broadcasted on ESPN+.
