Men's basketball amasses 26 assists, shoots 64.9 percent in win over Defiance

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A whole lot of balance, not to mention a whole lot of pinpoint passing, led to a whole bunch of points for the Bellarmine University men's basketball team.

On Sunday in Freedom Hall, five different players scored in double figures, and the Knights shot 64.9 percent overall in steamrolling to a 92-43 win over Defiance.

Defiance hung around in the first half as Bellarmine (3-6) took a 40-27 lead into halftime, but the Knights were overwhelming in the second stanza, when they shot a blistering 76 percent (19 for 25) and outscored the Yellow Jackets 52-16.

Senior guard Dylan Penn collected a team-high 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting, freshman forward Curt Hopf collected 14 on 6-of-7 accuracy, senior guard CJ Fleming and junior forward Sam DeVault tallied 11 points each, and senior guard Juston Betz chipped in 10 on 5-for-5 shooting.

Bellarmine piled up a season-high 26 assists. Fleming racked up a career-high eight, senior forward Ethan Claycomb notched a career-best seven and Penn tied a career high with seven. Betz corralled a career-best eight rebounds, as did Hopf, as the Knights had a 39-14 advantage on the boards and 54-12 superiority in points in the paint.

Bellarmine's starters combined for 23 assists and only four turnovers.

"When you do that, you're going to shoot 64.9 percent," Knights Coach Scott Davenport said. "I'm proud of these guys today."

Davenport said he recognized the team's focus even before the walk-through officially began, when the Knights were prepping approximately 20 minutes before Davenport even joined them.

"We had 17 players on the court, and there was no (fooling around)," described Davenport. "All I said to them was 'thank you.' "

Bellarmine took the lead for good at 13-12 on a 3-pointer by DeVault. Hopf pushed the advantage to double digits at 25-15 with a basket, and the Knights carried a 13-point edge into the intermission.

Bellarmine and Defiance exchanged baskets to open the second half, but the Knights followed with a 23-0 run. Twelve players saw action for Bellarmine, with junior center Baylor Younker drilling a 3-pointer and sinking his other two shots in scoring a career-high seven points.

Bellarmine will host Asbury at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at the KFC Yum! Center in downtown Louisville.
