Men's and women's swimming both claim victories in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.. — The Bellarmine University men's and women's swim teams each tasted victory in Terre Haute on Saturday.

The women's team (2-2) competed against Eastern Illinois (1-3) and Indiana State (3-4) in a double dual.  The Knights topped EIU 141-121 and fell to the host Sycamores 192-67. 
 
BU's men's team defeated Eastern Illinois 167-95, pushing the Knights' record (2-1) to above .500 for the first time in the Division I era.
 
The men racked up six individual wins, including three from Daniel Sims.  D. Sims was victorious in the 100 breaststroke (59.83), 200 breaststroke (2:10.69), and 200 IM (1:57.34).  His brother, Matthew, continued his dominance in the 200 butterfly, beating the pack with a time of 1:55.56.  M. Sims also touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke (2:00.42).  Other winners include Brandon Thomas in the 1000 freestyle (9:50.81), Greyson Williams in the 200 freestyle (1:46.79) and 500 freestyle (4:53.31), alongside Carter Reynolds in the 100 backstroke (54.20) and Jacob Dray in the 100 butterfly (51.61).
 
Knights swimmers finished first, second, and third in three different events (100 backstroke, 200 IM, 200 breaststroke), proving their stellar effort. 
 
On the women's side, despite no first place finishes, Bellarmine earned its second win of the year against EIU. 
 
Rachel Walker competed very well in freestyle, placing second in the 500 (5:13.40), fifth in the 100 (55.46), and sixth in the 200 (1:57.78). Caroline McMillin nabbed fifth place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.64), while Avery Witcher picked up a fifth place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:12.93).  Another swimmer who raced to fifth was Lexi Pierce in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.50).
 
Saturday represented the final competition for the men's and women's teams this semester.  Next up, the women travel to Vanderbilt on Jan. 8 to face the Commodores, South Carolina, and Campbell.  The men's team will not return to the pool until Jan. 15 against Evansville at home.
