LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Normally
Tim Chastonay would be ecstatic to watch his son score two goals.
However, on Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the sight was bittersweet at best.
AJ Chastonay, the son of the Bellarmine University men's soccer coach, scored Belmont's first two goals in a 3-0 victory over the undermanned Knights in nonconference action.
AJ Chastonay was making his collegiate debut for Belmont (1-0), while Bellarmine (0-2) was making its D1 home debut.
Bellarmine played a man down for the last 80 minutes after a Knight received a red card. Bellarmine hung tough and held a 5-4 advantage in shots at halftime.
AJ Chastonay entered a little over 10 minutes into the second half, and it took him less than a minute to score his first collegiate goal. Jack Shaw found him and Chastonay converted from the right side of the box for a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.
In the 80th minute, Chastonay stole the ball from a Bellarmine defender and capitalized off a quick touch from Liam O'Brien on a shot from close range for a 2-0 advantage. O'Brien headed in a cross from Michael Saunders in the 84th minute for the final goal.
Bellarmine finished with a 12-9 lead in shots, but Belmont had a 5-3 advantage on frame. Sophomore midfielder
Andrew Minnis was unlucky on a header that hit the crossbar, and senior midfielders
Greg Fischer and
Micah Linscott had a near connection on a scoring chance in the first half.
Bellarmine will make its ASUN debut Saturday at Lipscomb.
