Knights defense can't match fine offensive showing in loss to North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. — The good and the bad didn't quite even out for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team on Monday as the Knights fell 89-76 to North Alabama in Flowers Hall in ASUN action.

The offense of Bellarmine (4-14, 4-9 ASUN) produced plenty of positives against North Alabama (7-15, 6-7). The Knights easily recorded a season high in field-goal percentage (52.6), their point total was a season best and their 30 field goals made topped all previous efforts.

Bellarmine's defense, however, yielded its most points in ASUN play as North Alabama hit 46.8 percent of its shots, including 13 3-pointers. The Lions were also 18-of-22 from the free-throw line (81.8) and held a 37-28 rebounding advantage.

"They really pushed the ball, and we couldn't stop it," Knights Coach Chancellor Dugan said. "We've got to work on our defense. We gave up too many layups and too many kick-outs for 3s."

Junior guard Presley Brown tallied a career-high 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists for Bellarmine. Senior guard Breia Torrens notched 13 points and senior guard Tasia Jeffries chipped in 10. Junior forward Danielle Feldkamp matched a career high with seven points and her seven rebounds was one shy of a career best. Freshman guard Hannah Farrell collected a career-high five assists.

Jaida Bond drained five of her six 3-point shots in scoring a game-high 24 points for North Alabama, while Sakyia White amassed 13 points and 16 rebounds. Jaila Roberts was one rebound shy of a triple-double after supplying 13 points, 11 assists and nine boards.

Bellarmine was strong out of the gate and built a 31-21 lead after one quarter. North Alabama cut its deficit to 44-41 at halftime and overtook the Knights 66-61 after three periods.

It was a one-point game in the fourth when North Alabama ran off a decisive 14-2 run for an 83-70 lead with less than four minutes left.

Bellarmine and North Alabama will meet again at 3 p.m. (ET) Tuesday. The series was postponed from the weekend due to inclement weather.
