ST. LOUIS--The Bellarmine field hockey team suffered another shutout at the hands of Saint Louis University on Sunday at SportPort in suburban St. Louis as the Knights fell 5-0 to the Billikens.
Â
"This weekend was definitely a learning experience for us," said Bellarmine Head Coach
Devanny Boisvert. "This season we have the opportunity for doubleheaders against the same team. Our biggest focus moving forward is adjusting to the other team's tendencies."
Â
"Our mental approach struggled today and although we created opportunities on the offensive side of the ball, we need to finish those last few passes in the circle," Boisvert said.
Â
The Billikens got on the board just 70 seconds into the game, but the Knights were able to slow the Saint Louis offense a bit and trailed just 2-0 at halftime. After the break, the Billikens tacked on three more scores to make the final 5-0.
Â
Emily Wastell scored twice for the Billikens on just four total shots while Lauren Pendergast and Grace Golembiewski added two assists apiece to lead Saint Louis. Â
Â
The Billikens attempted four times as many shots as Bellarmine, outshooting the Knights 16-4 with 10 of those shots on target.
Â
Bellarmine's
Breanna McWhorter made four saves on nine shots before giving way to freshman
Danni Swallow, who made three saves for the Knights. Â Offensively for the Knights,
Anna Crump fired off two shots while
Lindsay Sturgeon and
Cassidy Sweeney each got off one shot apiece.
Â
Next up for the Knights is a two-game homestand against Central Michigan on March 12 and 13. Both games will be played at 4 p.m. at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville.
Â
"We saw a lot of positive things from this weekend and things that we need to work on for the next couple of weeks before facing Central Michigan." said Boisvert.
