JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The nerves may be fried, but the winning streak of the Bellarmine University women's basketball team is still fully operational.
On Saturday in Swisher Gymnasium, Bellarmine captured its fourth straight win in another heart-stopper, as the Knights rallied late to push the game into overtime before securing a 75-71 victory over Jacksonville in ASUN action.
Senior guard
Tasia Jeffries registered a team-high 18 points with seven rebounds for Bellarmine (4-10, 4-5 ASUN), which erased a seven-point deficit with less than three minutes left to force the extra session against Jacksonville (2-10, 0-7). Senior guard
Breia Torrens tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, freshman guard
Hannah Farrell posted a career-high 10 points and junior guard
Kathleen Scott chipped in nine points and four assists.
"They did a great job getting stops," Knights Coach
Chancellor Dugan said. "We got some huge defensive rebounds, we got some steals, we got some deflections. It was a team effort."
Jacksonville was searching for its first ASUN win, and it looked to be in its grasp when the Dolphins extended their lead to 61-54 with 2:31 left in regulation. Senior captains Torrens and Jeffries followed with the most critical stretch of play in the game for Bellarmine, as Torrens canned a jumper and Jeffries buried a 3-pointer and delivered an and-one to slice the deficit to 63-62 with 1:34 left.
Bellarmine tied it up on a free throw by junior guard
Presley Brown, and after a Jacksonville basket, junior forward
Sheniqua Coatney evened it up again with two from the charity stripe with 34 seconds left. The Knights forced overtime with a defensive stop.
Once there, Coatney scored the first two baskets of the extra session. Jacksonville tied it at 71 with 56 seconds left, but Scott followed by sinking two free throws. The Dolphins missed a go-ahead 3-point attempt, and Torrens nailed another pair from the charity stripe for a 75-71 lead with 22 seconds left, an advantage the Knights preserved after Brown sealed the win by blocking a Jacksonville trifecta attempt.
The top-shooting team from the free-throw line in the ASUN, Bellarmine was shaky from the charity stripe in regulation, hitting only 15-of-23 attempts. However, the Knights were 6-for-6 in overtime.
"In overtime, in the last five minutes of the game, we really stepped up and hit them," Dugan said.
Bellarmine and Jacksonville will meet again at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
